Scientific Motivation
This workshop is proposed along the lines of two previous workshops
held in CECAM, one in 1996 on
"Pattern Formation in Surface
Reactions" organized by L. M. Sander and one in the year 2000 on
"Statistical and Dynamical Aspects of Surface Reactions:
Theory, Modelling and Experiments" organized by two of the present proposers.
Several of the 1996 and 2000 workshops participants are contacted for this forthcoming
activity as well as other scientists more recently active in this field.
Common ground between the proposed workshop and the
previous ones is that they bring together scientists with different background
experimentalists, modelers and theoreticians to discuss recent developments
and to address open problems in the field of mesoscopic nonequilibrium phenomena.
The proposed workshop will find its own specificity by focusing on the dynamics of interface
phenomena at the meso and nanoscales and more specifically on the emergence of non-linear
macroscopic properties as a result of dynamical exchanges in these scales.
Scientists working on mesoscopic dynamics, from different points of view
and backgrounds need to assess the
current status of the research, to determine problems that need to be attacked theoretically and
numerically and to determine the best theoretical and numerical methods to be used for each particular case.
From the experimental point of view, recent advances in the fields of catalytic surface reactions,
heterogeneous combustion, pitting
and general corrosion, electrochemical promotion, transport on metallic surfaces and surface
diffusion, percolation,
surface growth and other related surface processes will be assessed with
particular attention paid to the dynamical mechanisms
acting at the meso or nanoscales but produce effects observable macroscopically in the experiments.
From the theoretical side, different approaches will be confronted ranging from nonlinear mean-field
description (reaction-diffusion equations), to statistical mechanics (discrete models) and to mesoscopic
modeling (stochastic methods and Monte Carlo simulations).
Even more striking are expected to be the
discussions between experimentalists and theoreticians in order to set up precise goals and formulate
strategies to establish qualitative and quantitative approaches for the description of
mesoscopic dynamics on surfaces.
During the discussions groups, we propose to address the
following specific topics:
- dynamical exchanges between the nano, meso and macroscales;
- wave propagation on surfaces of specific geometries;
- dynamical mechanisms responsible for wave propagation on
surfaces/interfaces and the role of boundary conditions;
- influence of anomalous transport mechanisms in interfacial
phenomena, fractal surfaces and
disordered media;
- local pattern formation and the influence of fluctuations;
- how local mesoscopic dynamics lead to global macroscopic
oscillations and non-linear behavior;
- the bridging of length and time scales between the different
computational
approaches at the microscopic and mesoscopic level and the experimental
macroscopic results.
Other questions could of course emerge from the morning presentations. The final aim of this workshop is
that exchanges of ideas between experimentalists, theoreticians and modelers will contribute essentially in the
development of the field.
